I heard of this before, but unlike a lot of people on Tumblr, rather than making a beeline for them, I tend to sidestep things that are cat-related. However, for some unknown reason, when a princeofcatscomic reblog came across my dash today or yesterday, I decided to check it out. So far, so good.
The story is about Lee Holtzer, a high school student who has the ability to talk to cats. He saved a kitten and to thank him, the kitten offered to grant him one wish. At this point in his life, he doesn’t believe he has anything so incredible going on that it requires a wish to solve it, so he decides to wait and in the meantime, he’s gained this gift of communication. In addition to this, graduation is on the horizon and he and his best friend, Frank Murakami, have some things to sort out. Throw in some friends, some family members, developing personal and sexual identities, and a county somewhere near me on the Delaware River and you’ve got something I’m not sure what to make of yet, though I have a good feeling. Handwerker calls it “a queer love story,” so I suppose I’ll go with that.
The story is almost at the end of its run; Handwerker has promised to post the final update–a full chapter–post-hiatus, in December. I haven’t decided if I’m going to wait until it’s concluded to start posting, or if I want to start sooner. December is a blink away, so if I procrastinate long enough, it may not matter. Anyway, until then, you can find out more about Prince of Cats below:

Even if you’re only halfway interested, please check out the “About” page–it’s one of the most informative I’ve come across for a webcomic and I really appreciate those kinds of things. After reading it, I felt like I had a decent idea of what I was getting into, but not so much that there was no room left for surprises. The only thing it’s lacking is a complete cast bio section.
