H.G. Wells: When the Sleeper Wakes

Read by Frederick Davidson

It was interesting and I was enjoying it, not wowed, but it kept my attention for the most part. However I dropped it with about two hours to go. I was turned off by how terribly uninspired the role and life of black people were in this futuristic tale of a man who woke up after a 200-year trance owning half the world. And not just black people, every non-European peoples mentioned were cast as some post-savage era lot, it was the direct and vehement opposition the main character held in regards to the black police, who were quite literally a class of police who were black and chosen for their ability to do what they were told. What’s the point of dreaming about the future, a grand future, a future with an abundance of reformations and new types of oppression, if you’re just going to keep things like that the same?

Davidson’s voice was alright. I could probably listen to it again, but I think it would do better for something set in London or thereabouts between the late 18th century and the very early 20th century.
