First Impressions: Kelly Sue DeConnick & Valentine De Landro’s Bitch Planet #1

This is only three issues in and I’ve only read the first, but I think it’s going to be a very engaging story. I didn’t have any expectations before reading this nor did I know what it was about, so I read it with complete curiosity. By the end they introduce two main characters, but when I started reading I couldn’t tell who was really important (in that sense) and who was expendable and only there to set the tone. I rather liked that.

The society in this story has gone to extremes with capitalism, callousness, and possibly the patriarchy; there wasn’t one woman in a position of power–they were either warm, disposable bodies, projections, or inmates in the non-compliant facility colloquially known as Bitch Planet. The storytelling is quite good–I was caught up in the Collins’ story and when it all came to an end, I was wide-eyed and practically speechless. I did not see that coming. And I hope to be met with more awe-inducing moments for issues to come, because this is a must read.
